The world leader in the production of air-conditioning equipment GREE has won a prestigious global award for super-efficient residential air-conditioning solutions. GREE won the prize place at the international competition for innovation and high-efficiency solutions for domestic air conditioning Global Cooling Prize, which was launched in 2018. with the support of British entrepreneur Sir Richard Branson. The initiative is worth $3 million and was looking for technology to cool homes with at least 5 times less climate impact than standard indoor air conditioners, while at the same time costing the super-efficient technology a maximum of 2 times the cost of basic air conditioners .
Chinese manufacturer GREE Electric Appliances, partnering with Tsinghua University, proposed a hybrid solution using direct evaporation of refrigerant, which is present in standard air conditioners, cooling the air conditioner condenser and ventilation. GREE's innovative technology allows automatic switching between the individual modes (direct evaporation, cooling of the air conditioning condenser by adiabatic cooling or ventilation), and parallel operation is also possible under certain external weather conditions. In the new air conditioner, GREE implemented a new compressor design using the low GWP (Global Warming Potential) R152a refrigerant and advanced evaporators and condensers for more efficient air cooling and drying. The solution also includes a small solar photovoltaic panel integrated into the outdoor unit.
We have made a commitment until 2025. to bring to market affordable residential cooling air conditioners using this new super-efficient cooling technology, commented Dong Mingzhu, Chairman and President of GREE Electric Appliances.
The ability to transform cooling systems is now a reality that can help combat climate change, commented Sir Richard Branson.
For The Global Cooling Prize
The Global Cooling Prize was launched by a global coalition led by India's Ministry of Science and Technology, world-leading research organization Rocky Mountain Institute (RMI) and Mission Innovation, a global initiative of 24 countries and the European Union to accelerate global clean energy innovation . The initiative is supported by British entrepreneur Sir Richard Branson.
